American Idol, Season 10: Top 4 Performance – “If you don’t stick your tongue down my throat, we’re through.”

American Idol, Season 10: Top 4 Performance – “If you don’t stick your tongue down my throat, we’re through.”

So last week I was travelling and missed the shows thanks to my Slingbox.  This week my power decided to go out about 30 minutes into the show and I had to catch some of the show via americanidol.com – so bear with me if I missed something exciting during one of Ryan’s intros.  Oh well, such is the life of an intrepid purveyor of sarcastic and insightful opinions on American Idol.

It was an important week this week – the final stop before the top 3 (and the ensuing visits home).  Ryan pointed out this was the same week that Chris Daughtry went home in his season, and reminded everyone to vote.  Each contestant sang two songs – one that “inspires them”, and one from the catalog of Leiber and Stoller.  So who was the guest mentor?  Lady GaGa, of course.  I know that’s who I think of when I think of Leiber and Stoller.  How did they do?  Let’s go to the big board and see…

American Idol, Season 10: Top 5 Performance – “I saw you dance with the Devil tonight.”

American Idol, Season 10: Top 5 Performance – “I saw you dance with the Devil tonight.”

I had to travel for work last week and my Slingbox decided not to cooperate with me.  I wasn’t able to watch Idol on Wednesday or Thursday.  No worries, I thought – I would just catch up over the weekend, write my reviews, and move on.  Well, that didn’t quite work out the way I planned.  Seems my family actually wanted to spend time with me after being gone all week, so I got precisely zero work done on the reviews.

I had just begun watching this week’s performance show when I realized I still had not written anything for last week.  That just wouldn’t do, but I also didn’t have the time to recap 2 ½ hours from last week AND  1 ½ hours from tonight (I have to get to bed sometime.)  So, faithful readers, you are about to experience a speed review from last week.  Quick and to the point, but still filled with sarcasm and incredibly insightful observations from yours truly.  Hope you enjoy it!

American Idol, Season 10: Top 6 Results – “I may be good, but when I’m bad I’m even better.”

American Idol, Season 10: Top 6 Results – “I may be good, but when I’m bad I’m even better.”

I’ll just be honest with you all this week – I’m exhausted.  I have a headache, I’m not in the best of moods, and my foot itches (okay – maybe that last bit was a little bit of TMI).  Suffice it to say, I don’t have a witty opening for my recap this week.  I’m saving what snark I have for the recap below.  I’ll just say this – tonight’s show had some musical performance, some filler, a little more filler, and then someone got eliminated.  Want more detail, and more snark, than that?  Then read on…

American Idol, Season 10: Top 6 Performances – “No marching band, no flaming piano.”

American Idol, Season 10: Top 6 Performances – “No marching band, no flaming piano.”

And then there were six.  Just under a month to go until the finale of American Idol, Season 10.  With the eliminations getting harder to predict, this week saw the Idols singing not only solo, but also in duets on the live performance show.  After weeks of current and contemporary themes, Idol chose this week to turn the clock back and appeal to the soccer moms in the audience.  This week’s theme?  The songs of Carole King.

There is no doubt that Carole King is an amazing artist and songwriter, but still I found it curious Idol decided on her music as the centerpiece for the final six.   There were some good performances and some not – but overall the songs didn’t grab me this week.  Why you ask?  A myriad of reasons – but first a few random observations about the show –

  • Was Randy going to audition for the new C-Lo Green video after the show?  What was with that outfit?
  • There were a few interesting signs in the audience. The grandmother holding the sing saying “Steven: Walk this Way” was a little disconcerting.  And to the guy hold the “I’m Here” sign.  Yes, yes you are.  But we still don’t care.
  • Nice to see Constantine Maroulis, Penny Marshall, and the tall guy from “Everybody Loves Raymond” in the audience.
  • Babyface was a surprisingly good guest mentor with Jimmy this week.  Of course, anyone is an upgrade from wil.i.am.

Now on with our regularly scheduled recap…

American Idol, Season 10: Top Seven Results – “Bada-Boom, Bada-Bing, Bada-Bang.”

With only five weeks to go until the finale, Idol is quickly coming to the home stretch.  After tonight, we find ourselves with only six of the original top thirteen still standing.  It’s been a long day for me and I had an itchy finger for the TiVo tonight, so what say we just dive right in to the fun.  Shall we?
